Functional Anatomy of the Pelvis and Sacroiliac Joint
Provider Name:
National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)
Activity Type:
On-Demand Activity
Description:
The pelvic complex serves as the central hub of force transfer between the upper body and lower extremities. This course provides Athletic Trainers with a modern, holistic understanding of pelvic anatomy, sacroiliac joint (SIJ) mechanics, and pelvic floor function within athletic performance. Led by Dr. Sonja Forster, DPT, the curriculum explores how pelvic ring alignment, intra-abdominal pressure regulation, and deep core stability influence lumbopelvic hip complex stability. ATs will learn non-invasive assessment techniques to evaluate SIJ dysfunction, pelvic tilt, and muscular imbalances in adductor, gluteal, and abdominal groups. The course demystifies the role of the pelvic floor in athletic hernia prevention, core stiffness, breathing dynamics, and incontinence in high-impact sports. Clinicians will gain practical therapeutic exercise progressions that stabilize the pelvic ring and enhance kinetic chain power transfer.
Objectives:
Analyze the functional anatomy and biomechanics of the sacroiliac joint, pubic symphysis, and surrounding pelvic ligaments.
Describe the synergistic relationship between the diaphragmatic breath, abdominal wall, and pelvic floor in managing intra-abdominal pressure.
Perform differential diagnostic screening tests to distinguish sacroiliac joint dysfunction from lumbar spine and hip pathologies.
Identify signs and symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction and dynamic instability in high-impact and athletic populations.
Design non-invasive exercise interventions to re-establish muscular balance across the anterior and posterior pelvic slings.
Construct functional rehabilitation protocols that integrate lumbopelvic stability into multi-directional athletic movements.
