Yoga Anatomy, Physiology, and Biomechanics
Provider Name:
National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)
Activity Type:
On-Demand Activity
Description:
Mind-body movement modalities such as yoga are increasingly integrated into sports medicine for flexibility, injury prevention, and athletic recovery. Led by Dr. Constance Bradley, this course offers an anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical analysis of yoga postures (asanas) for Athletic Trainers. Clinicians will study joint angles, fascial tension, muscle activation patterns, and spinal loads involved in foundational postures. The curriculum covers the physiological effects of controlled breathwork (pranayama) and parasympathetic nervous system stimulation on athletic recovery, stress regulation, and pain perception. ATs will learn how to critically evaluate yoga postures, modify poses for injured athletes, and safely utilize movement sequences to enhance joint mobility, neuromuscular control, and tissue resilience.
Objectives:
Analyze the biomechanical stresses, joint range demands, and muscle activation profiles of primary yoga postures.
Explain the physiological effects of controlled breathwork on autonomic nervous system balance and athletic recovery.
Identify potential joint and soft-tissue injury risks associated with end-range yoga postures in hypermobile or restricted athletes.
Modify traditional yoga poses using props and anatomical adjustments to accommodate specific athletic injury profiles.
Apply yoga-inspired active mobility sequences to improve functional range of motion and postural alignment.
Evaluate the impact of mindfulness and movement practices on chronic pain modulation and athlete stress reduction.
Construct targeted active recovery protocols integrating breathwork, passive restoration, and gentle biomechanical loading.
