- The wrist and hand are among the most frequently injured body regions
encountered in athletics, requiring athletic trainers to quickly differentiate injuries
that can be managed conservatively from those requiring urgent referral. This
presentation will review the evaluation and management of common traumatic
injuries, including scaphoid fractures and jersey finger, emphasizing clinical
recognition, imaging considerations, and return-to-play decision making.
- Participants will also examine common neurological conditions affecting the wrist
and hand, including peripheral nerve entrapments and sport-related neuropathies.
Finally, attendees will learn practical hand therapy techniques that can be
incorporated into everyday athletic training practice, including therapeutic exercises,
manual therapy principles, edema management, splinting considerations, and
functional rehabilitation strategies to optimize athlete recovery
Objectives:
• Identify the clinical presentation, physical examination findings, and referral
indications for common traumatic hand injuries, including scaphoid fractures
and jersey finger.
• Differentiate common neurological conditions affecting the wrist and hand
by recognizing key signs, symptoms, and appropriate diagnostic
considerations.
• Apply evidence-based rehabilitation and hand therapy techniques, including
therapeutic exercise progression, edema management, manual therapy,
and splinting principles, to improve functional outcomes and facilitate safe
return to sport
