Why it matters that hydration status influences the rate of rise of core body temperature during intense exercise in the heat: Implications for athletes, laborers, and warfighters.
Provider Name:
Arizona State University - College of Health Solutions - Hydration Science Lab
Activity Type:
Single Occurrence Activity
Description:
This talk will overview the historical/physiological/medical/logisitical aspects of the role that hydration plays on core body temperature and performance during intense exercise in the heat for athletes, warfighters, and laborers. It will provide an overview of some of the debates related to this topic, the current state of our physiological understanding, the policies in place to protect vulnerable populations in these circumstances, and practical strategies to maximize safety and performance when a worker or athlete must do prolonged intense exercise in the heat.
Objectives:
1. Learning Objectives
a. Understand the historical debate related to the role of hydration status on HR and body temperature changes during intense exercise in the heat
b. Understand the potential physiological mechanisms as to why dehydration influences a greater rise in core body temperature and heart rate as compared to when exercise is done in thermo-neutral conditions or when the exercise in the heat is not intense.
c. Be aware and able to utilize practical strategies to combat the exaggerated the exaggerated physiological responses during intense exercise in the heat to promote safety and performance for the athlete, warfighter, and laborer.
d. Have an understanding of the policies and procedures that different entities have in place to enhance safety during intense exercise in the heat.
e. Understand the potential medical implications when the intense exercise in heat influences core body temperature rise to the point of potential safety issues and what to do if an emergency presents itself.
