Description: Low back pain remains one of the most common reasons for visits to primary care physicians and a leading cause of disability, healthcare utilization, and lost productivity. Primary care clinicians are frequently the first point of contact for patients presenting with acute and chronic spine-related pain, vertebral compression fractures, and neuropathic pain syndromes. Despite the prevalence of these conditions, significant variability exists in evaluation, treatment selection, referral timing, and care coordination across healthcare settings. Current clinical practice emphasizes evidence-based assessment of back pain, including identification of red flag symptoms, appropriate use of diagnostic imaging, risk stratification, and implementation of conservative management strategies. However, many patients continue to experience prolonged pain, functional impairment, and delayed access to effective therapies. Primary care providers often face challenges distinguishing patients who are likely to benefit from continued conservative care from those who may be candidates for advanced interventional treatments. Management of vertebral compression fractures remains inconsistent. While conservative therapies are commonly employed, many patients who may benefit from vertebral augmentation procedures such as kyphoplasty are not identified or referred in a timely manner, potentially resulting in persistent pain, reduced mobility, and diminished quality of life.

Objectives: Following this activity, participants will be able to appropriately evaluate back pain, identify patients with potential vertebral compression fractures or neuropathic pain, and determine when referral for interventional pain treatments is indicated.
