Explain energy availability in plain terms and recognize that RED-S occurs in male and female athletes across all sports. 2. Differentiate a planned short-term caloric deficit from problematic low energy availability, and explain why body weight is an unreliable indicator. 3. Describe how low energy availability disrupts the menstrual cycle and testosterone, and identify how hormonal contraception can mask the warning sign. 4. Identify at-risk athletes using intake questions and validated screening tools within the scope of practice of a physical therapist or athletic trainer. 5. Outline a multidisciplinary referral and management plan, including the first treatment priority and the clinician's role in monitoring trends over time.
