3rd Annual UofL Health Sports Medicine Symposium: Unique Topics in Sports Medicine
Provider Name:
UofL Health
Activity Type:
Single Occurrence Activity
Description:
The dynamic one-day sports medicine symposium is designed for healthcare professionals, to explore unique clinical and performance topics. The event features interactive case discussions tackling critical issues like sudden cardiac illness and health considerations for the female athlete. Expert-led lectures will delve into specialized areas such as team effectiveness in college athletics, sports hand injury and rehab, orthopedic oncology in young athletes, and youth sports specialization and injury prevention. To provide practical, hands-on learning, attendees will also participate in targeted break-out sessions covering advanced skills including musculoskeletal ultrasound, return-to-sport participation, pelvic floor rehab, velocity-based training, innovative dynamic warm-up, and manual therapy techniques for both the shoulder and lumbar spine
Objectives:
1. Understand the on the field and medical management of complex cardiac cases in competitive athletes and when it is safe for the athlete to return to sport.
2. Identify the key factors that influence interdisciplinary team effectiveness and the strategies to positively influence interdisciplinary team effectiveness
3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of the most common athletic hand injuries
4. Understand some of the common surgical procedures for sports hand injuries and the proper rehab progression.
5. Demonstrate proper transducer placement for identifying key musculoskeletal structures during a diagnostic ultrasound exam.
6. Understand how to utilize a comprehensive hamstring management program that integrates isometric, isotonic and multi-plane exercise, across the pre-injury, acute, and post-injury rehabilitation phases to effectively address posterior chain weakness.
7. Apply specific manual therapy techniques to improve glenohumeral joint mobility and reduce pain in overhead athletes.
8. Interpret force plate data and dynamative metrics to objectively assess an athlete's readiness for return-to-sport.
9. Perform targeted joint mobilizations for the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint to restore symmetrical pelvic alignment.
10. Prescribe corrective pelvic floor exercises that coordinate with core stabilization routines for athletes experiencing dysfunction.
11. Utilize velocity-based training metrics to adjust daily training loads and optimize power output in competitive athletes.
12. Construct an innovative dynamic warm-up sequence that optimizes neuromuscular activation and movement efficiency before high-intensity training.
13. Discuss the individual roles of the various providers involved in interdisciplinary care of the female athlete, and how expectations are defined by the group.
14. Describe the metrics used for return-to-sport decision making with the female athlete, and how that is communicated to the patient and coaches.
15. Integrate knowledge of normal musculoskeletal developmental milestones to recognize common injuries in youth athletes and apply evidence-based injury prevention strategies in clinical or athletic settings.
16. Identify red flags of the more common orthopedic tumors in young athletes
17. Recognize clinical and radiologic signs of malignant and benign tumor
