Running & Sprinting: Assessment to Performance Virtual Course
Provider Name:
Functionalmovement.Com
Activity Type:
Single Occurrence Activity
Description:
Running and sprinting are more than techniques—they are expressions of movement quality. This course bridges the gap between movement assessment and performance, demonstrating how the Functional Movement Systems (FMS) approach can be used to better understand biomechanics, improve efficiency, sort out recurrent injuries, and reduce future injury risk in both sprinters and distance runners.
Through real athlete case studies, video analysis, and practical movement assessments using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), and Y Balance Test, participants will learn to identify movement patterns that influence running mechanics and performance. Rather than simply coaching external technique, attendees will develop a systematic framework for determining why inefficient mechanics occur and how movement limitations contribute to compensation, performance deficits, and common injuries.
The course explores the unique demands of sprinting and distance running, including front-side mechanics, top-speed mechanics, running economy, force production, and gait characteristics. Participants will connect movement assessment findings to common biomechanical faults and injury presentations while gaining treatment ideas for intervention and corrections.
Designed for clinicians, coaches, strength and conditioning professionals, and movement specialists with a foundational understanding of FMS, SFMA, or Y Balance Testing, this course provides a practical, evidence-informed approach to integrating movement systems into running and sprint performance. Through interactive discussion, case-based learning, and expert Q&A, attendees will leave with a repeatable process for assessing, correcting and managing runners and sprinters from evaluation through performance.
Objectives:
1. Describe the key biomechanical differences between sprinting and distance running, including front-side mechanics, ground contact characteristics, trunk position, and force application.
2. Identify and interpret movement findings through FMS, SFMA, and YBT that may influence running performance and injury risk.
3. Analyze running and sprinting mechanics using video and observational assessment to recognize common movement faults such as overstriding, negative tibial angle, pelvic instability, poor hip extension, and excessive trunk motion.
4. Differentiate movement dysfunctions associated with common running-related injuries and performance limitations by linking assessment findings to biomechanical compensations.
5. Develop and justify individualized corrective strategies that integrate movement assessment findings with running and sprinting biomechanics to improve performance and reduce injury risk.
