Description: The treatment of the overhead athlete requires in-depth understanding of common throwing injuries, throwing-related anatomy, throwing mechanics, and return to sport principles. Incorporation of comprehensive examination, clinical decision making, and treatment techniques is also a key component of treating this specialized population. This course will discuss advances in diagnosis, surgical procedures, and sport-specific rehabilitation for improved patient outcomes to help return these athletes back to play at a high level of performance. Clinicians must have current, evidence-based knowledge and advanced skills to provide superior care to this patient population. Virtual lab sessions, case presentations, and panel discussions will allow participants to integrate anatomy, biomechanics, examination, surgical precautions, and exercise into practice.

Objectives: Discuss how biomechanical flaws in the pitching motion can lead to potential injury. Identify examination principles useful in developing a differential diagnosis for the overhead athlete. Integrate evidence-based principles into treatment progression of throwing related injuries. Identify how workload is monitored in the overhead athlete. Discuss the metrics used to construct throwing programs. Identify areas of inefficiency and opportunities for injury prevention through assessment of the kinetic chain. Develop a comprehensive musculoskeletal and video analysis process for assessing the overhead athlete.
