Emergency Response for Baseball and Softball
Emergency Response for Baseball and Softball
Provider Name: Cogent Steps LLC
Activity Type: Multi-Occurrence Activity
Description: Approximately 25.6 million people participate in baseball and softball at all levels of competition, making baseball and softball combined the number one participated team sport in the United States. Although relatively safe sports, baseball and softball do have injury risks associated with participation. Many of the injuries associated with playing either of these sports are overuse related injuries, but there are risks of acute injury as well as rare severe and life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders must understand the basics of each of the sports, the risk of injury, venue management, and strategies to reduce the risk of injury at all competitive levels.
Objectives: Identify and describe the most frequent acute injuries in baseball and softball. Recall primary and secondary assessment steps and identify when to safely move a player to perform the secondary assessment off the field. Differentiate between emergent/serious injuries that require immediate advanced medical referral vs those injuries that do not. Apply knowledge of injuries to preparing an appropriate sideline medical kit. Discuss the mandatory and elective protective devices for baseball and softball and discuss the value of each as it relates to injury prevention. Outline the basics in an emergency action plan for a baseball/softball venue.
