Pilates Principles
Pilates Principles
Provider Name: National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)
Activity Type: On-Demand Activity
Description: Pilates principles offer a proven, structured framework for neuromuscular re-education, core stabilization, and athletic movement refinement. Taught by certified Pilates instructor and CSCS Karen Vizueta, this course adapts core Pilates concepts directly for athletic training settings. Clinicians will explore the six core principles—Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow—and translate them into active rehabilitation protocols. The course emphasizes mat-based movements, lumbo-pelvic control, diaphragmatic breathing integration, and eccentric spinal and hip stabilization. Athletic Trainers will learn how to utilize Pilates exercises to address postural alignment, muscle imbalances, and movement compensations common in sports. Incorporating these low-impact, highly precise exercises helps ATs build core strength and body awareness in recovering athletes.
Objectives: Explain the six foundational principles of Pilates and their application to sports rehabilitation and motor control re-education. Instruct athletes in lateral diaphragmatic breathing to optimize core stiffness and postural control during movement. Analyze lumbo-pelvic alignment and identify spinal movement compensations during mat-based exercise progressions. Execute Pilates-based corrective exercises targeting deep local core stabilizers, including the transversus abdominis and multifidus. Modify traditional Pilates movements to suit varying stages of musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation and athletic ability. Design structured mat-based exercise sequences that enhance mobility, dynamic stability, and athletic movement control.
