On-Demand Activity
Description:
- Gen Med in Athletic Training is a comprehensive continuing education program designed to enhance athletic trainers’ knowledge and clinical decision-making when managing general medical conditions and acute emergencies in the athletic population. The program will address ECAST, sickle cell disease, rhabdomyolysis, facial fractures, anemia, and iron deficiency, with an emphasis on recognition of signs and symptoms, appropriate assessment, differential considerations, emergency management, referral, and return-to-participation considerations.
- Athletic trainers routinely encounter athletes presenting with medical conditions that can mimic musculoskeletal injuries, exertional fatigue, dehydration, or other common sports-related complaints. While athletic trainers receive foundational education in general medical conditions, ongoing exposure to less-common or evolving conditions may result in gaps in recognition, differential diagnosis, emergency management, and appropriate referral.
- Athletic trainers are often among the first healthcare professionals to recognize medical conditions that may initially present as nonspecific symptoms or be mistaken for routine athletic fatigue or injury. Early recognition and appropriate intervention can significantly affect patient outcomes. This program will provide practical, evidence-informed education that athletic trainers can apply directly to their clinical practice.
Objectives:
• Identify the common signs, symptoms, risk factors, and clinical presentations associated with ECAST, sickle cell disease, rhabdomyolysis, facial fractures, anemia, and iron deficiency.
• Differentiate potentially serious general medical conditions from more common presentations such as dehydration, exertional fatigue, heat illness, or musculoskeletal injury.
• Describe appropriate initial assessment and emergency management strategies for athletes presenting with these conditions.
• Recognize red flags and clinical findings that warrant immediate emergency care, physician evaluation, diagnostic testing, or specialist referral.
• Discuss the role of the athletic trainer within the sports medicine team in the recognition, management, documentation, referral, and follow-up of these conditions.
• Apply evidence-informed clinical decision-making to case scenarios involving general medical conditions commonly encountered in athletic populations.
• Implement appropriate strategies for athlete education, prevention, and risk reduction related to these medical conditions.
