Immediate Assessment & Neurological Screening
Immediate Assessment & Neurological Screening
Provider Name: ImPACT Applications, Inc.
Activity Type: On-Demand Activity
Description: Healthcare professionals have a basic knowledge and understanding of the sideline and off-field evaluation for concussion using the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 (SCAT6) and the Child version (Child SCAT6). However, the Immediate Assessment/Neuro Screen, the consensus recommendation for on-field evaluation of all athletes who are suspected of having a concussion or head injury, may often be overlooked to have the immediate transfer of an athlete from the playing field to the sideline. The items involved in the on-field evaluation are essential for identifying immediate medical emergency and neurological complications, that may require on-field intervention, such as spinal mobilization or cervical collar application, or transportation to a hospital or medical center. This program will provide a comprehensive overview of the on-field evaluation, prior to administering the SCAT6. Additionally, this program will highlight clinical outcomes data related to various items in the on-field evaluation, as well as highlighting variations in assessment items, such as Maddocks Questions, AVPU scale and the FOCUS tool.
Objectives: At the end of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Identify on-field red flags and neurological deficits requiring immediate emergency management or removal from play. 2. Recognize sign, symptoms, and observable signs that raise suspicion for a sport-related concussion or more serious traumatic brain injury following a suspected impact or force transmitted to the brain. 3. Differentiate between neurological emergencies requiring immediate emergency action and athletes who are appropriate for a transfer to the sideline or locker room for SCAT6 administration. 4. Review different level of consciousness assessment tools, scoring methods, and data on neurological injury and recovery. 5. Apply memory assessment questions unique to your setting, sport, or patient population for the assessment of orientation and amnesia in the head injured athlete.
